No doubt, starting up a private practice and seeing new clients as a therapist is exciting but scary. There is uncertainty, change and risk. What you are feeling is natural. Maybe you are further along in your practice but still feeling pressure to succeed or keep up, struggling to balance work and personal life or your Imposter Syndrome is still getting too loud. Getting stuck in that fearful loop and being lured by the 'shoulds' or 'should nots' is so easy and almost addictive but it can derail us from following our gut and our desires. The fear not only blocks us but can lure us down an unhealthy path, in not believing in ourselves as therapists and making poor choices.
This fear holds us back as thriving therapists and from accessing our empowered and authentic selves.
Mentorship could be exactly what you need. Let's be clear, it is not clinical supervision or business coaching. Having a mentor means connecting with someone you trust and feel safe opening up to. A mentor has more experience and you can learn from them. It is a person you can get guidance and insight from, ask questions, and be encouraged by. A mentor can help keep you accountable and will share their wisdom and share lessons learned. It is their first-hand experience they draw from.
I believe a mentor is also a soft place to land, to slow down, get grounded and gain balance. It is within this mentor-mentee relationship that you can also learn to accept where you are in the process and acknowledge your strengths and values. It is about confidently aligning with who you truly are and how you want to be as a therapist for your clients.
Are you at least a little curious to learn how not to follow the 'shoulds/should nots' and other's expectations? Let's create a path for you to practice authentically and according to your vision.
I have been a Psychotherapist in private practice for 8 years. Before this, I had previous careers in education, international development and humanitarian aid work. In these prior careers, I taught and designed powerful mentorship programs and trained teachers to become successful mentors. I was also fortunate enough to have had my own experiences both as mentor and mentee. These experiences were profound and invaluable.
As a mentor, my mindset, awareness, experience and compassion were important for what happened in the mentoring relationship. It gave me an understanding of how ongoing learning and support can feed both persons' personal and professional development positively. As a mentor now, I draw from my extensive teaching and mentoring experiences. My mentorship journeys provided me with learning, support and guidance at the time but pushed the boundaries beyond that. I felt empowered me with the confidence, clarity and direction in my professional choices. In fact, choosing to become a Psychotherapist in the first place came from a mentorship experience.
Working with a good fitting mentor at any stage of the therapist journey can be a transformative and cathartic experience. If you are open to it, the right mentoring experience can help you navigate the often challenging and complicated terrain as a therapist. It can also help you to let go of the fear and scarcity beliefs that are limiting you. In turn, the new space allows balance, energy, growth and fulfillment to emerge and expand.
Like my work as a therapist, I believe a flexible and personalized approach is essential in the mentoring relationship and process. You have particular needs, goals, personality and beliefs. Having said, there are common challenges and hurdles amongst therapists so a small group format is possible.
While the mentorship sessions can feel informal, we will work together to create what you need; building in practical tools and resources, feedback and accountability and continual support.
