My psychotherapy approach

Think of me as a fellow traveller in your healing and growth journey........

I believe our therapeutic connection contributes to your change. Developing a respectful and collaborative relationship with you can enhance your openness to guidance, encouragement and support from me so that you are empowered through the counselling process.

My style is supportive, encouraging and accepting. I tend to take more of a direct yet empathetic approach. I am a strategic and present listener. I use humour and lightness and keep sessions more casual rather than clinical to create trust, openness and safety. I allow space for in-depth emotional exploration and processing, yet there is also space to be practical and have action-oriented solutions.

I appreciate that you are the expert of your experiences so my role is to validate and guide you, ask the right questions, challenge you, provide different perspectives, offer feedback on unhealthy thought and behaviour patterns and help you see and do things in new ways.

Integrating creativity + life coaching + talk therapy in psychotherapy

Honours your uniqueness and I can respond to your way of learning and reacting

Allows for flexibility so that your growth work can begin from any starting point

Appreciates you as a whole person

Integrates both process/exploration and progress/goals

Can approach the same issue from different perspectives

Has the potential to increase your engagement in counselling

Creativity

Creativity taps into the different senses and means experiencing.  It can help to address the mind/body link, enhance emotional understanding in a non-intimidating way and can promote presence and awareness. In counselling sessions, it can take different forms: visual arts, writing, working with sand or play doh, music, using photographs or body-movement. I also use the Hakomi method and Qigong when appropriate.

Life coaching skills

Life coaching tends to be more action driven. By using these skills I can help you change perspective, recognize obstacles and set the future goals and strategies to get where you want to get to.  Life coaching techniques offer clarity and support taking thoughtful action.

Talk therapy

Talk therapy helps you focus on the long term; digging deep and emotionally exploring. You can become more aware to shift painful emotions, self-destructive patterns and use coping skills. When counselling, I draw from such evidence-based talk therapies as: Solutions-focused therapy, CBT, Narrative Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems model, Humanistic Therapy and self-compassionate mindfulness-based techniques.
